With the formal approval of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Hong Kong Institute of Technology officially adopts, with effect from today, the government-approved business name Academia Technologica Hongkongensis. This name, which serves as the Institute’s standardised international business designation, is directly translated into Chinese as “香港技术院” (Hong Kong Academy of Technology). It is the Institute’s authoritative international identifier for the global academic and scientific community, and marks an important milestone in the Institute’s progress towards professionalism and internationalisation.
In this name, “Academia” represents the academic hall and the heights of scientific research; “Technologica” highlights technological innovation and industrial empowerment; and “Hongkongensis” is a standard suffix widely used in international academic nomenclature, clearly indicating the Institute’s Hong Kong regional identity and institutional affiliation. The name as a whole is solemn, rigorous, and formally refined, fully in keeping with the naming conventions of leading international research institutions, and further enhancing the Institute’s international recognition and academic credibility.
As an important force in Hong Kong’s innovation and technology ecosystem, the Hong Kong Institute of Technology has always leveraged the unique advantages of “one country, two systems,” closely aligned with the national strategic plan for scientific and technological self-reliance and self-strengthening. Focusing on core areas such as frontier technology R&D, commercialisation of research outcomes, and cultivation of innovative talent, it actively connects with the technological innovation resources of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, injecting sustained momentum into Hong Kong’s development as an international innovation and technology centre.
The adoption of the new name marks a new starting point and, more importantly, a new commitment. The Hong Kong Institute of Technology (Academia Technologica Hongkongensis) will uphold innovation-driven development and open cooperation, remain rooted in Hong Kong, serve the nation, and connect with the world. It will continue to strengthen its research capabilities and industrial support capacity, making new and greater contributions to Hong Kong’s high-quality development and to the building of a strong nation in science and technology.
